Link to Access Google’s AdWords: Keyword Tool
Getting listed correctly on the “local business results” of the major search engines is critical to your success.
For example, if you list your business as “wedding planner” you are twenty eight times more likely to attract a buyer than calling yourself a “bridal consultant.” That’s because on a monthly basis there are roughly 246,000 searches for “wedding planner” and only 8,500 for “bridal consultant” worldwide.
Choose your words carefully.
You want to choose the most popularly searched words that best describe your business. These are your “keywords.” A keyword is a word or phrase that people type into a search engine when they’re looking for solutions. Some words are more profitable than others.
In the examples above, we used the keyword phrases “event planner Philadelphia,” and “party planner Philadelphia.” Which keyword do you think is searched more often? Hmmm. Place your bets.
Here’s the short answer. It doesn’t really matter which one you think is searched more often. Because you’d only be guessing. Too many people guess at this and get it wrong. Don’t believe me? Take this quiz;

You can’t afford to guess at keywords. Guess wrong and it could cost you thousands of dollars a month in lost opportunity.
AdWords Keyword Tool
Choosing the right keywords to describe your business is critical to your entire web strategy. So, how do you find the best keywords? The AdWords Keyword Tool makes it simple.
The “keyword list” that Google gives you will be one of the most important lists you’ll ever construct.
The right keywords are essential to everything else you’re going to do online. From local search to blogging, if you use the right words you’ll get better results. Keep your list up to date. Now you have a marketing tool that 99% of your competition doesn’t even know about.
By using the right keywords you’ll attract more qualified visitors to your website, blog, social sites, and directory listings. Be sure to use these keywords in your site but don’t “keyword stuff.” The search engines want to see you use these words naturally. If they see the same keyword repeated too many times on a single page, the search engine assumes you are trying to trick them and that the page won’t make their users happy. When you keyword stuff your site is considered “spammy,” and may not get indexed at all. Use keywords to construct useful content.
The Google report I ran on our quiz words shows that the least likely searched keyword was “events planner” with a monthly average of only 8,100 searches worldwide; while the most popular was “event planning” with over 368,000 searches. Notice the plural “Event Planners” got 100,000 fewer searches than the singular “Event Planner.”

The chart above comes from another great free marketing tool, Google Trends. Use it to check on market action and seasonal trends.
Keyword Tips
Keep in mind that some words may be very popular but not the best choice for your local search category. Don’t just choose the most popular word, choose the most popular word that your buyer would use when searching for a local provider.
For example: Let’s say you sell bridal gowns. Google shows that the keyword “wedding” gets over 30 million monthly searches while “wedding gowns” gets only 450,000.
Even though “wedding” gets searched more, it’s not likely that someone would use that keyword to find a place to buy a gown. Optimize your site with buying-mode keywords, not curious-mode keywords for local search.
